The trickster figure in mythology is the inventor of lie, as well has he the invention of culture on his name. The name of the exhibition and the book of Lewis Hyde ‘Trickster makes this world’ (1998, fdgbooks) inspired me to make this work. In this new work, Van den Heuvel explores how to deal with a complex or multiple shapes. Her answer turns out to be a constant medial and narrative shifting in black, white and grey shades on a red floor. She elaborates on this shift by exploring the tense relationship between the coherent installation and the installation that is fragmented in various media. It is a matter of a narrative mourning or does the artist take a risk in order to re-engage with the complex form, without completely securing this form, or without causing the form to shift not only medially, but by exploring other possibilities? In the latter case, she re-enters the artistic domain. Van den Heuvel found inspiration for this work in the figure of the trickster in Lewis Hyde’s book “Trickster makes this world” (1998). Prominent in this work is also the artist’s fascination with literature and the difference between the subjective and objective knowledge, and with how image and word relate.
